Now we need to consider an additional concept about relative spacing between notes. If we are playing an A note, and we then move to B note, we have moved a whole step. However, if we are in A and we move to an A#, we have moved only a half step. Notice, then, that the guitar is designed so that each fret represents a half step change in pitch. To change by a whole step, we need to move two frets up or down.
